How important is structured discussion in a single adult ministry?

Answer: I think it is VERY important and also desired! Think about it…Single Adults don’t have a spouse to talk to.  They go home to an empty apartment, a dog, cat, child, or… Read More possibly a roommate they may not even like! Where do they have regular opportunities to talk about their life, hurts, hopes and desires? I recommend some discussion time, even 10-15 minutes, during every regular class or group meeting. Teaching principles are applied to real life during discussion.

Talk It Over

You might also consider a ministry model called Talk it Over. This model is designed to allow people to talk, exchange ideas, get better acquainted, and learn from each other on a regular basis in a Christian setting for a period of at least 1 hour.

Topics used are life – issues single adults face. The total time recommended, including social time, is 90 minutes. This model can be used in a church room, home, classroom, or other neutral setting with flexible seating.

Basics of Talk It Over include:

  • 1 Topic - All groups have the same topic
  • 7 - 8 people per group - tables & chairs or chairs only in small circles
  • Form # of groups by dividing attendance by 7 and counting off
  • Make sure every group has BOTH males and females – allow guests to sit with their hosts
  • Discussion leaders facilitate the discussion
  • NO teaching, facilitators LEAD the discussion
  • Discussion time - 1 hour with possible large group wrap up
  • Prayer - short prayers at end of discussion either in the small groups or in large group wrap up
  • Attracts visitors and non-Christians
  • Attracts immature & mature Christians
  • Location - church rooms & neutral settings
  • Frequency - weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly
  • Refreshments following - helpful for fellowship
