Illinois Adult Ministries conducted its first camp for single parents and their children on July 26 and 27, 2002 at Lake Williamson Christian Center in Carlinville, IL. Only 60 were expected to attend, but over 100 were present! Illinois is the second district in the nation to sponsor such a camp.
It was a weekend packed full of activities for the Single Parent Family! Friday afternoon was a great time of recreation, with activities such as canoeing, swimming, paddleboats, water-slides, the Blob, the Zip Line, Basketball, Volleyball, Fitness Room, Handball, Mini-golf, and a Rock-Climbing Wall. There was something for everyone! After the families joined together for their evening meal, there were four simultaneous sessions for the groups attending: Single Parents, Teens, Elementary, and Toddlers. After the evening service the groups were invited to go on hayrides or to join together in the Dining Hall for an ice cream sundae with all the toppings! Single Parents had opportunity to share with one another and interact with speakers for a very informal time of fellowship.
Saturday was filled with teaching sessions and family recreation. The Single Parent Family Camp experience culminated on Saturday when all of the families came together for a Family Service and Communion. In this service single parents were encouraged to pray a prayer of blessing over their children as they served communion to them.
The Single Parent Family Camp is designed to reach out to, care for, and disciple the single parent family as part of the church body. The next Single Parents’ and Children’s Camp is scheduled for July 25- 26, 2003 at Lake Williamson, Carlinville, IL.
